A Dickens of A Do, YCA Festive Event, Askham Grange, York; Thursday 19 November, 11am to 3pm
In 1843, Charles Dickens wrote a novella that was to prove one of his most enduring masterpieces. “A Christmas Carol” was completed in just a few weeks, sold out within three days and has remained constantly in print ever since. Our guest speaker, Lucida Hawksley, Great Great Great Grandaughter of Charles Dickens, looks at the social reasons that led Dickens to write the story, the message he wanted to portray and what it is about this seemingly simple story that continues to inspire readers, actors and film makers today.
Actor Dominic Gerrard (RSC/West End) brings his celebrated one man performance of A Christmas Carol to the YCA. Tim Carroll (Globe/West End/Broadway) directs this magical re-telling of Dickens’s classic Christmas story, This story will transport you, stave by stave, through Scrooge’s life as he journeys out, one bleak Christmas night, with the ghosts that have been sent to reclaim him…
